Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., blasted the nation's 'wealthy' individuals and families on Wednesday, some of whom he stated had gained vast amounts of wealth as many Americans experience severe financial setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sanders posted a Twitter post writing that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had earned $111 billion throughout the pandemic, while Amazon’s Jeff Bezos had made $78 billion and the Walton family – which has Walmart – earned at least $66 billion. At the same time, the independent senator said “tens of millions” of families face "economic desperation."

Data summed up this week revealed that Musk overtook Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the world’s second-richest individual, second only to Bezos.

Sanders, who is a self-described democratic socialist, has been open about his belief that the rich should pay more in taxes. He suggested a wealth tax to break up family fortunes, too.

Many have struggled to understand the difference between “democratic socialism” and regular socialism. When asked about the matter, leaders in the movement have predominantly led to the Scandinavian countries as an example.

So Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, gave Sweden as an example describing “democratic socialist”, as AOC said, “What we have in mind and what my policies most closely resemble are what we see in the UK, Norway, in Finland, in Sweden.” Sanders sticks to this talking point as well, repeatedly stating that the US should look to Sweden and other Scandinavian nations to learn from what they have accomplished for their working people.

The former U.S. Labor Secretary under President Bill Clinton, Robert Reich, made similar remarks on Twitter Wednesday, criticizing a system that enables Bezos to increase his wealth by $66 billion over five months, while 40 million Americans face eviction.

The U.S. unemployment rate in October was 6.9%, and covered about 3.7 million job losses that would probably be permanent.

Some workers are preparing for another wave of coronavirus-related job changes – as a peak in new cases has ended in the imposition of renewed limitations in places like Los Angeles, where outdoor, in-person dining is set to be banned starting on Wednesday night.

Although, Democratic socialists in America propose trillions in public spending under the absurd notion that heavily taxing “the rich” alone can pay for their proposals. In reality, you could tax every “rich” person in America at 100 percent and still come up far short.
