After over 35 years, Atlanta’s landmark CNN Center will no longer house CNN operations.

Instead, they will move to the Techwood Turner Broadcasting campus located in midtown Atlanta, the exact location where co-founder Ted Turner began operations in 1980. Back then, a 24/7 cable news network was a unique idea.

Seasoned media members made fun of the new network founded with the help of a guy who had inherited his money from his father’s outdoor advertising business. According to the Western Journal, they called CNN the “Chicken Noodle Network.”

To their surprise, CNN rose to make a mark in the industry, receiving steady revenue from cable subscriptions, advertising sales, and an ever-increasing viewership. By 1987, CNN had grown and occupied the Omni Center, which sported a vast atrium offering dining and shopping options and tours of CNN facilities.

The Omni Center was quite impressive. Its theater ran the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind” continuously. Turner had bought the rights to the movie from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This was just the start of what would become another network, Turner Classic Movies.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Western Journal reported that many tourists would visit the CNN Center. A.J. Robinson, Central Atlanta Progress president, said, “That building and that real estate is part of the postcard of Atlanta. Ted created an entire industry here and helped build the city’s international status.”

The “postcard of Atlanta” concept was tied to the simple CNN building’s logo and the network’s far-reaching influence. CNN brought international flavor and fame to the city.

In the earlier days of CNN, it became known for its worldwide reach and acceptance in the mainstream news industry, particularly having coverage of the 1991 Gulf War.

Later, as CNN reporting became increasingly left-leaning, it was dubbed the “Clinton News Network” and “Communist News Network” by Rush Limbaugh. The number of viewers began to drop. Removing the iconic logo from the CNN Center was emotional for former CNN president Tom Johnson. He said he was heartbroken that operations were leaving the CNN Center, adding, “So many of my friends tell me how they’re going to miss that wonderful CNN logo on top of CNN Center. It just meant so much to us.”

Tenisha Tidwell, a former executive producer of the network, was in shock. According to the Western Journal, she said it was like getting a phone call “and finding out your parents were selling grandma’s house.”

While CNN veterans have left its ranks, and the network is far from Fox that leads in ratings, the future of the CNN Center is still being determined, but one wonders if the network will ever regain the excitement of its glory days.
