Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced former CEO of Theranos, was caught trying to flee the country after she was sentenced for her fraud-related crimes connected to the collapse of Theranos.

She was convicted on four counts of wire fraud in January 2022 and was sentenced to 11 years in November 2022.

The Daily Wire reports that federal prosecutors revealed that Holmes attempted to book an international flight to Mexico in January 2022. Prosecutors revealed that the ticket was booked for a one-way trip with no return flight. It was only canceled after it was revealed to the defense council. In other words, Holmes appeared to be poised to take the trip to Mexico until it was canceled.

The document that federal prosecutors put out said the following:

“The government anticipates Defendant will note in reply that she did not, in fact leave the country as scheduled,”

and

“but it is difficult to know with certainty what Defendant would have done had the government not intervened.”

The document also stated that William Evans, who married Elizabeth Holmes in 2019, allegedly departed the country “on the scheduled date with a one-way ticket and did not return until approximately six weeks later, returning from a different continent.”

Prosecutors said that Holmes continues to show no remorse for her victims or her actions during her time at Theranos. They also said that she seeks to “loosen the restrictions placed on her region of travel based upon vague references to her partner’s work commitments.”

The document added the following:

“Defendant, however, cannot meet the stringent standard for release pending appeal mandated by Congress. There are not two systems of justice, one for the wealthy and one for the poor. There is one criminal justice system in this country. And under that system, the time has come for Elizabeth Holmes to answer for her crimes committed nearly a decade ago,”

Holmes pulled the wool over the eyes of many investors, employees, and others by making them believe that the company’s portable blood analyzer could diagnose a wide range of diseases and other issues with just a few drops of blood from the user. Everything came crashing down when it was determined that this was not true. However, at the height of the company’s popularity, it had a $9 billion valuation, and Forbes touted Holmes as the youngest self-made female billionaire. However, it was all a fraud.
