The Hill has reported on this story and states that the former President is earning 48 percent of the support from GOP voters, with his nearest competition being Ron DeSantis at just 28 percent. None of the other potential candidates in the poll reached even double-digit support among GOP voters.

The Hill reports that this poll is the latest evidence that Donald Trump continues to outperform among voters and stands out as the preferred choice of many people within the Republican Party.

DeSantis is still a force, and the poll was also conducted with Trump not listed as a choice for voters. In that scenario, DeSantis earned 49 percent of the voters, and former Vice-President Mike Pence had only 14 percent of the vote.

Trump is the only candidate to officially announce a White House campaign in 2024. DeSantis, Pence, and many other names are being tossed around as likely candidates to run for the office of President in 2024, but they have yet to announce their intentions officially. Some may be scared off by the idea that they will have to run head-to-head against President Trump. However, others are eager to take on that opportunity.

Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, noted that despite the substantial poll numbers for Trump in this survey, he has a ceiling on how high his numbers can go, and it seems that he has reached that ceiling. He has a lot of supporters as his base, but they are all on board and sticking with him now. Another candidate will have to look for a way to either peel off Trump supporters, grow their base of supporters, or both.

Penn said the following:

“Trump has strengthened somewhat, but Ron DeSantis continues to strengthen as well,”

This poll was conducted between January 18th and 19th among 2,050 registered voters. The vote was a team effort between the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll.
