Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is reportedly considering selling the Washington Post newspaper he owns to purchase the Washington Commanders football team, according to the New York Post.

Speculation that this could happen has only grown since the leaked video of Fred Ryan announcing planned layoffs at the Washington Post was released to the public. That video showed some frustrated and disgruntled workers who are not happy that they might be facing the ax at their job.

One of the hurdles that Bezos will have to overcome is that the current owner of the team, Dan Snyder, is embattled and fighting sexual harassment allegations. However, he is still sour on some of the reporting by the Washington Post about the alleged toxic culture in the Washington Commanders organization. Therefore, it might still be a challenge for Bezos to potentially purchase the Washington Commanders team after all.

Some speculate that Snyder believes that Bezos encouraged the extra tough coverage of the situation within the Washington Commanders organization to try to force Snyder to sell the team.

The New York Post reports that Bezos had an awkward visit to the newsroom at the Washington Post last week that only led to even more speculation that there might be layoffs coming to the business.

There is now speculation that the Washington Post might be up for sale, with some bids placed by potential bidders.

One anonymous source close to the situation told the New York Post:

“I think Bezos’ people could go to Dan and say as a gesture of goodwill, ‘We are selling the paper,’”

Front Office Sports reports that Snyder has retained Bank of America to help put the Washington Commanders team up for sale. They also reported that Snyder continues to court Bezos for the sale even though it is not entirely clear that Snyder wants to let go of the team.

The source that had all this information also noted that Bezos has NOT hired an investment banker or even indicated one way or the other if the Washington Post will go up for sale. It is simply speculation by the public that is driving this conversation at the moment.

All of this said, it seems likely that the Washington Commanders will be sold to someone else at some point, as Snyder is considered too embattled to continue to own and run the team.
