Pope Francis made statements catching the attention of Catholics worldwide and people of all faiths.

The AP reports that Pope Francis stated that laws against homosexuality are unjust. He also says that he calls upon Catholic bishops worldwide to welcome LGBTQ+ members and that God loves all His children as they are.

The Pope recognized that some Bishops worldwide support the criminalization of homosexuality, and he referred to their support of these types of laws in terms of that support being a sin. This has surprised many Catholics and others who are accustomed to the Church’s generally strong stance against same-sex marriage and other laws that back up and support same-sex relationships of any kind.

The Associated Press reports that the Pope said: “These bishops have to have a process of conversion,” and he said that they should apply “tenderness, please, as God has for each one of us.”

Gay rights activists have praised the Pope’s comments as some of the first ever made by the Pope about laws that try to ban homosexual acts in various places around the world.

More than 67 countries and jurisdictions around the world have criminalized consensual same-sex sexual activity, according to the AP. They also note that 11 countries say that they will impose the death penalty against those who engage in same-sex sexual activity despite the bans.

In the United States, more than 12 states still have anti-sodomy laws on their books despite a 2003 Supreme Court ruling declaring those laws unconstitutional. Gay rights activists pointed to those laws as lasting signs of discrimination and saw that such things were used to justify hatred and discrimination against them. They would like to see these laws repealed as they have no purpose other than to marginalize homosexuals further.

The United Nations continues to call for the repeal of all laws that forbid same-sex relationships. They saw that such laws violate the privacy and freedom of those who engage in same-sex activity. However, many countries refuse to abandon their anti-LGBTQ laws.
