New York City Democrat Mayor Eric Adams is making a recommendation to business owners that has many of them outraged, and for good reasons.

The Daily Caller reports that Mayor Adams spoke with MSNBC on Wednesday and suggested that it is wise for business owners to pay for private security firms to protect their businesses and assets.

The New York Post reported that a group of Bronx-based businesses known as the Fordham Road Business Improvement District would operate the so-called "Ambassador's Program" of five people who work between 2 pm and 6 pm Wednesday through Saturday.

This unarmed group's role is to deter would-be thieves from businesses in that area. While it is good that some groups are standing up for themselves like this, it is upsetting to many that such situations are necessary to consider.

MSNBC's Jonathan Lemire made mention of the cover of the Post, which covered the story, by saying:

"We saw the front page of 'New York Post' here this morning, I'll hold it up, talking about how there are some here in the Bronx, shopkeepers, that there's a sense of feeling of the police aren't doing enough, that they are fed up with NYC crime," and followed that with: "Shop owners are hiring private guards to fight back. Is that a wise strategy?"

Mayor Adams responded to this question, according to the Daily Caller, by saying:

"No, it is a wise strategy because I say this over and over again, not only must the numbers reflect safety, but people must feel safe."

"We had a summit two weeks ago with all of our major chains to look at the repeated grand larcenies and larcenies that have taken place in the stores and we're going to come up with a major initiative in that place."

All of this comes during a massive crime spike in New York City that has been ongoing since 2020. The New York Times reported that murders and shootings fell, but retail thefts are up 16% compared to the same statistics in 2019. Serious assaults are also up 18% compared to years prior, but the number of arrests made by the NYPD is down.

Politico reports that Mayor Adams has strongly criticized the no-cash bail system implemented by New York State. However, some wonder if some of the increase in crime is directly tied to the system that the state has set up.
