Mexico is set to become one of the most severe against those who might have wanted to light up a cigarette on public beaches in the country.

Fox News reports that a new law in Mexico is slated to create heavy fines for anyone who attempts to smoke a cigarette on a public beach. One can be fined up to $550 for each new law violation.

Fox News reports that more than just public beaches will be protected under this new law. It is a law that will protect many other public areas, such as parks, town squares, hotels, stadiums, and other areas where people gather. The law went into effect last week.

The BBC reports that the law “amounts to one of the most stringent anti-smoking laws in the world,” It also includes a ban on advertising tobacco products and deems that cigarettes are not allowed to be displayed inside a store.

Gady Zabicky Sirot, head of Mexico’s National Commission against Addictions, put out a statement about all of this that stated:

“Mexico becomes one of the countries at the forefront in protecting the health of children and adolescents.”

It is still being determined at this time if the law will be enforced strictly or not. Approximately one in eight citizens of Mexico says that they smoke. That accounts for approximately 16 million people, according to the BBC. The BBC also reports that some citizens are highly concerned that corrupt law enforcement officers might use the new law to shake money out of people.

Diana Cedillo, deputy director of the National Office of Tobacco Control, told the Washington Post that the fines for smoking in public places in Mexico could rise as high as $550 per offense and that a law on the books in Mexico since 2008 could mean that smokers might face up to 36 hours in jail for any violations of this law as well.

The Washington Post reported that one hotel in Mexico, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, has already posted changes to its policies related to smoking on its properties. This hotel is trying to get ahead of the potential issues it might face as these new smoking laws continue to play a significant role in how Mexico adapts to the new smoking laws that are coming into place right now.
