According to the Washington Examiner, a group of high school students has banded together to sue Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his decision to block an Advanced Placement class in Florida schools.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is taking the lead on this lawsuit on behalf of three AP high school students. The lawsuit was announced at the Capitol building at noon on Wednesday. It is unclear at this point which accusations will be put against the Governor or what the specific complaints will be when they are made. However, the lawsuit is moving forward at this time.

The Washington Examiner states that Ron DeSantis has claimed that the course is a “political agenda on the wrong side of the line.”. The Washington Examiner obtained a letter from the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Articulation that said the course lacked educational value and thus violated state laws.

The College Board first put the course out last year, offering it in 60 schools as part of a pilot program for the 2022-2023 academic year. The College Board intends to make the course available to all schools in the United States in the 2024-2025 academic year. According to the Washington Examiner, the first exams related to this course will occur in 2025.

Florida state Sen. Shevrin Jones attacked DeSantis’ decision to bar the course by pointing out several other AP courses, including AP European History, Art History, Japanese, German, Italian, and Spanish Language and Culture.

Jones wrote the following in a tweet: “It’s crazy how AP African-American studies made the chopping block in FL,” She then continued by saying: “This political extremism and its attack of Black History and Black people are going to create an entire generation of Black children who won’t be able to see themselves reflected at all within their education or in their State.”
