Actress Octavia Spencer recently spoke on a podcast about the 2011 film “The Help.”

She stated that the movie can’t be made now because people are erasing history, but the movie should be made now.

She began by speaking about how we are erasing history books, eliminating the opportunity to make references to history, even when talking about art. However, she said that’s why we should make the movie today. Per Fox News, “‘Could ‘The Help’ be made today? I don’t know. Should ‘The Help’ be made today? Absolutely. It represents people who made real contributions to society but were never rewarded for those contributions,’ Spencer added.”

The movie “The Help” was based on a novel by Kathryn Stockett. The best-selling book was centered around life in the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The movie brought issues like civil rights and discrimination to the forefront of people’s minds again. It highlighted what life was like for black Americans during this time.

However, the main story of the movie brought criticism from many. It centered around maids that worked through the movement for wealthy and white southern families. Co-star Davis made headlines when she expressed guilt for being in the movie and criticized the plot. According to Fox News, “The white audience at the most can sit and get an academic lesson into how we are. Then they leave the movie theater and talk about what it means. They’re not moved by who we were,” Davis said.

However, there were quite a few that appreciated the movie. They felt it showed individuals who black people are, something that history doesn’t do enough of. The line-up of actors and actresses received much praise for their roles in the movie. It received an Oscar nomination in 2012, although it did lose.

Ironically, leftist activists support a course on black history that also pushes leftist ideologies, but actual history like this critically acclaimed film isn’t welcome. When we erase history, we are doomed to repeat it. We must stop pretending that life wasn’t like this and that these things never happened.
