Google is in big trouble now. The Department of Justice teamed up with eight states for a massive lawsuit against the tech giant.

According to them, they’re monopolizing ad space and abusing their power. The states in the case include New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Colorado, Virginia, California, Tennessee, and Rhode Island.

The Blaze reports, “According to the lawsuit, Google ‘corrupted legitimate competition in the ad tech industry by engaging in a systematic campaign to seize control of the wide swath of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers and brokers to facilitate digital advertising.’”

Google has been facing heat from the Department of Justice since 2020. The DOJ has filed five lawsuits against the tech companies in the past few years. It’s their first antitrust suit, though.

The suit’s goal isn’t to get millions of dollars from Google. Instead, it wants to make Google sell a portion of its advertising business, which brings them over $54 billion annually. On top of that, it would be impossible for Google to partake in what the lawsuit calls anti-competitive practices.

The suit points out that Google has so much power over online advertising space that it can easily exclude rivals. Per The Blaze, the complaint says, “With influence over advertising transactions end-to-end, Google realized it could become ‘the be-all, and end-all location for all ad serving.’”

However, Google says that the lawsuit has already been lost. The Blaze says, “‘Today’s lawsuit from the Department of Justice attempts to pick winners and losers in the highly competitive advertising technology sector,’ wrote Vice President of Global Ads Dan Taylor.”

The Vice President of Global Ads continues to point out that the lawsuit is similar to one already filed by Texas and was thrown out by a federal court. Taylor says that if they win the suit, it will be more difficult for small businesses to thrive because the cost of ads will go up.
