The Milwaukee Bucks NBA team had a drag show as one of the halftime performances at a recent game, and this has sparked a new wave of controversy.

Fox News reports that this was done as part of the Pride Night celebrations by the team. The game was played at the Fiserv Forum against the Denver Nuggets.

Fans who attended the game were allowed to purchase a unique package that would get them a ticket and a “Bucks Pride” scarf and beanie to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The halftime drag show was highly controversial on social media. Some people lent their support for this event, but others expressed concerns about children being in the audience for a show like this.

On top of the Pride Night celebrations, the Fiserv Forum announced that it would join the Safe Place community. This means that the stadium will be marked by the Milwaukee Police Department as a “safe space for underrepresented members of our community, including the LGBTQIA+ community, to call the police for assistance.”

Bucks players also featured in a pre-recorded video in which they told fans why it was necessary to welcome all people to the broader world of sports.

Bucks guard Pat Connaughton said the following in the video:

“The power of sport can bring everyone together. It doesn’t matter your gender. It doesn’t matter your ethnicity. It doesn’t matter your political views, and it definitely doesn’t matter your sexual identity.”

Joe Ingles added that it was important for “fans and athletes and everyone in this world to make sporting events and any event for the LGBTQ community more accessible and more welcoming.”

The players didn’t appear to take any issue with the Pride Night festivities, but the NBA might have instructed them to remain silent about it even if they did have concerns. The same hasn’t necessarily been true for other professional sports leagues and athletes. For example, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov sparked controversy by refusing to wear a specific pride-themed jersey for his team. He said this went against his faith and he didn’t want to get caught up in something like that.

Regardless, the Milwaukee Bucks won the game by 107-99. It was a statement win for the team as they have quite the rivalry between themselves and the Denver Nuggets.
