School choice programs are often used to enable parents who can’t afford to send their children to private schools to do so.

Vouchers cover large portions of the tuition and, in many cases, all of it. Typically, these vouchers are reserved for children that live in a school district that is considered failing or not meeting academic standards. However, Governor Abbot thinks every parent should be able to get one.

According to the Dallas News, “‘When a school does fall short of excellence, when it strays too far from the fundamentals or simply cannot meet the unique needs of a particular child, parents should not be helpless,’ he said. ‘They should be able to choose the education option that is best for their child.’”

In 2020, the state led a pilot program that gave microgrants to students with disabilities. The program was very successful, with grants going to over 65,000 students.

However, Abbot says that it shouldn’t be limited. Children shouldn’t have to live in a failing school district or have a disability to receive educational support through the state.

Abbot isn’t the only one that feels that way. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is also pushing universal vouchers for students. Both governors are using parental rights to make the legislation. Abbot also stated this in a recent speech.

According to the Dallas News, “‘No one knows what is better for a child’s education than their parents. He said parents deserve the freedom to choose the best education for their children. ‘Parents must be restored to being the primary decision-makers in their education.’”

As blue states shove transgender ideology into the classroom and push parents out, it’s refreshing to see governors like Abott and DeSantis respect parental rights. We, as parents, should have more of a say in our children’s education, which is why we need legislation like this.
