A new bill in North Carolina aims at the idea that gender-affirming surgeries will be permitted in the Tar Hill State.

Fox News reports that the legislation would make it illegal to perform gender-affirming treatments on minors.

The bill was introduced on Wednesday by Republican George Cleveland in the North Carolina House of Representatives. It would ban hormone treatments from being performed on anyone under 18. The legislation would state that doctors who remove any non-diseased body part would face a fine of up to $1,000 and could risk losing their license to practice medicine.

Similar pieces of legislation are being brought up in various states. For example, in January, Utah passed a bill forbidding anyone to perform gender-affirming surgery on anyone under 18.

Utah's Republican Governor Spencer Cox hasn't signed the bill. He has yet to take any public position on the legislation, and it is unclear where he stands. It is essential to know this because these bills are controversial in certain circles.

Some people want to see these surgeries continue to go forward. However, others suggest that it is not a safe way to help children and that some might have their gender changed before they have all the information about who they are.

There are specific measures taken to try to protect children who are born with ambiguous sex characteristics. They are exempted from the North Carolina bill at this time. Thus, they would not be specifically targeted by the legislation, which might help get the bill passed. It is unclear what the Governor of North Carolina thinks about the legislation, so it is unknown whether it will pass. This will be a question that has to be taken up within the state in question.
