During a press conference in Miami on January 30th, Mayorkas said, “We are dedicated to this mission. Today we mark the reunification of more than 600 separated families. But our work is not done. It will not be done until we’ve given every family the opportunity to reunify and to heal the wounds that they have suffered. We are incredibly proud of and committed to this mission.”
However, despite the reunification of families, Mayorkas also acknowledges the tragedy and loss of life that has occurred during the first two years of Biden's presidency as a result of his pro-migration policies.

As reported by Todd Bensman, an author and expert in immigration from the Center for Immigration Studies, "Countless individuals have perished as a result of the migratory flow caused by the border regulations implemented by President Biden." Mayorkas has not released any official estimates on the number of migrants who have died while attempting to reach the US.

Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) expressed his concern during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee on February 1st, “Can you see the uptick in the [death] numbers here? Way up here? That chart reflects the uptick in migrant deaths.
That’s 2020 to 2022. Almost 1,000 migrant deaths at the southwest border of the United States. We had 53 migrants die in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio — cooked in the Texas heat. Fifty-seven were killed when a tractor-trailer crammed migrants rolled over in a highway crash in Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas. Ask me this, is it Christian for migrants to die like that?”

Breitbart News reported that Mayorkas has attempted to reduce the number of deaths by encouraging migrants to take the "parole pathway." Despite this, the number of fatalities and families being split apart has been greater under Mayorkas' policies.
