Have you ever seen the movie “Orphan?” If you have, you will need to sit down for this one.

A couple in Indiana adopted a girl from Ukraine, but they wound up living a real-life version of the movie, minus the murder. The girl they had adopted was a woman. Now, thirteen years later, the family is speaking out.

Fox News says, “Michael Barnett and his then-wife, Kristine Barnett, adopted in April 2010 someone they believed to be a 6-year-old girl named Natalia, who suffers from a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. But the family soon questioned her age after dealing with allegedly violent behavior.”

Michael points out that Natalia attempted to poison his wife. He says that one night he woke up, and she was standing at the foot of their bed with a knife in his hand. This can be seen in a trailer for a movie about the family titled “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.”

After discovering they had an adult and not a child, the parents took the matter to court. Per Fox News, “In 2012, the parents petitioned a court to legally change Natalia’s birth year from 2003 to 1989, which was granted and changed her age from 8 to 22. The family then moved to Canada with their biological children, where their oldest son was slated to start college.”

However, in 2013, problems arose for the couple again. The woman lived alone in an apartment and was believed to be a child or dependent of the couple. In 2019, they were both arrested and charged with the neglect of a dependant.

The media was frenzy during the incident, capitalizing on the two parents neglecting their adopted daughter. That’s one of the reasons that the parents are speaking out. Fox News says, “‘Natalia was a woman. She had periods. She had adult teeth,’ Kristine added in the interview. ‘She never grew a single inch, which would happen even with a child with dwarfism. The doctors all confirmed she was suffering a severe psychological illness only diagnosed in adults.’”

After being arrested, both parents said the charges were unfounded because Natalia was an adult, not a child. Now, both parents are free. The father was found not guilty in 2022. The mother had all her charges dismissed in March 2023.

The three-part documentary series is said to have explosive interviews with the family, family members, and other close people, such as neighbors. The first part of the docuseries is set to be released on Investigation Discover on May 29.
