Republican Navy veteran Hung Cao has officially announced his candidacy to challenge Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine in Virginia.

Cao, a former combat veteran who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia, released a powerful video highlighting his gratitude for the United States, which took his family in as refugees in 1975, and his determination to prevent the country from being consumed by the same forces of darkness that brought him here.

In the announcement video, Cao, a 51-year-old father of five, can be seen forcefully striking wood with his fist, stating, "This is the scariest sound you will hear when you live in a communist country." He recalls that it was the last sound his Vietnamese parents heard when their fathers were taken away in the middle of the night, never to be seen again. Cao emphasizes that this sound represents the loss of freedom.

Cao and his family were among the millions who fled Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia between 1975 and 1995, following the capture of Saigon by communist North Vietnamese forces. Drawing a parallel between the fall of Saigon and the current state of America under the Biden administration, Cao suggests that the fear of a knock at the door is no longer exclusive to communist nations.

"Our country has taken a dark turn," Cao asserts.

Simulating the sound of knocking once again, Cao points out instances of what he sees as government overreach under President Biden. He mentions the arrest of a pro-life activist by the Justice Department, the IRS raiding a gun shop and seizing records of law-abiding gun owners, and the alleged political persecution of former President Donald Trump.

Cao argues that the country is losing its way, with individuals feeling compelled to deny the truth and accept falsehoods. He states, "We're forced to say that wrong is right. We're forced to lie. We can't let that happen."

Highlighting the need for strong representation in Washington, Cao, who served in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, declares that he is not finished fighting for the American people.

Cao's policy positions and platform include commitments to:

- Protecting the unborn and advocating for pro-life policies.

- Defending Second Amendment rights.

- Repealing the Affordable Care Act.

- Promoting small businesses and reducing government regulations.

- Supporting veterans and military families.

- Opposing excessive pandemic restrictions, including mask mandates.

Cao has been critical of pandemic restrictions, including mask mandates, according to CNN.

While Kaine is considered the favorite to win a third term, the recent Republican victories in the 2021 elections, including the election of Gov. Glenn Youngkin, have created uncertainty among Democrats, as reported by The Washington Post.

Following Cao's announcement, Democrats have launched attacks on his positions, particularly his support for the unborn, gun rights, and overturning the Affordable Care Act. Susan Swecker, chair of the state Democratic Party, stated, "Voters in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District already rejected Hung Cao in his bid for the U.S. House, and I can assure you he’s too extreme for the U.S. Senate."

Cao, who resides in Purcellville, Virginia, previously ran for the U.S. House but lost to Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton in a heavily Democratic district.

Earlier this month, Cao expressed his commitment to the United States, stating, "My family and I came to this country for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The U.S. gave us a home, a flag to stand under, and countless opportunities. We have been committed to returning the favor ever since."
