Rhode Island State Senator Joshua Miller, a Democrat, has been sentenced to pay restitution after admitting to charges of vandalism and obstruction of a police officer.

The incident occurred last month when Miller was caught keying a car with a "Biden Sucks" bumper sticker. Miller initially denied the allegations but later claimed that the victim had "dared" him to do it when confronted with video evidence by the police.

Speaking to reporters outside 3rd District Court in Warwick, Miller expressed remorse for his actions, stating, "I am truly sorry for my actions in this matter, and I am disappointed in my behavior and lack of judgment." He acknowledged that his lack of self-control had impacted his reputation and took full responsibility for the consequences of his actions.

During the arraignment, Miller pled no contest to the charges and was ordered to pay $2,850 in restitution to the car owner. Additionally, he was required to donate $250 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. If Miller remains crime-free for the next year, the case will be expunged from his record.

Despite the controversy surrounding his actions, Miller has stated that he has no intention of resigning from his position at the state house. This decision has drawn criticism from the Rhode Island Republican Party chair, Joe Powers, who called the plea deal "disappointing although not surprising." Powers characterized the outcome as another example of "politics as usual" in the state, where Democrats seemingly receive lenient treatment.

However, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, a prominent Rhode Island Democrat, defended Miller, describing his actions as "deeply regrettable" but emphasizing his dedication and passion as a public servant. Ruggerio argued that Miller's long record of service and his acceptance of responsibility warranted moving forward from the incident.

The City of Cranston Solicitor, Christopher Millea, dismissed claims of favoritism in the case, stating that Miller was treated no differently than anyone else. Millea declined to comment on the motive behind Miller's actions, as captured by surveillance footage at the Garden City Center in Cranston.

In the footage, Miller can be seen keying the car, and when confronted by the police at his home, he claimed that the victim was one of the "gun nuts" who had been stalking him due to his sponsorship of gun control legislation. However, the victim stated that he did not recognize Miller.

Body-cam footage revealed Miller telling the officers to contact Police Col. Michael Winquist, alleging that he was aware of threats from "gun nuts." The Cranston Police Department issued a statement clarifying that Miller had never reported any threats to Winquist or any member of the department. Winquist emphasized that no one is above the law, including those who make and enforce it, and commended the officers for their fair and impartial handling of the investigation.
