Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas proudly highlighted his efforts to eliminate the use of the term "illegal alien" within his agency during a discussion on the exploitation of the crisis at the southern border.

Speaking at the Aspen Institute Security Forum, Mayorkas was questioned by CNN's Fareed Zakaria about the broken asylum system and the influx of economic migrants who do not qualify for the process. In response, Mayorkas emphasized that the increasing number of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border should not be seen as individuals "gaming the system," but rather as people deserving of "dignity."

Mayorkas stated, "When we talk about gaming the system, it's important for everyone to understand the profile of the individuals we encounter. The president has spoken about the dignity of every individual, and I issued a memo early on that prohibited the use of the term 'illegal alien.' Instead, we refer to these individuals as 'noncitizens,' which underscores the importance of respecting their dignity."

Mayorkas further explained, "Consider a parent who, due to the lack of safety, allows their daughter to embark on a perilous journey to another country, hoping for a better life. This level of desperation speaks volumes. While that daughter may not be fleeing persecution based on her membership in a specific social group, she is not gaming the system either."

The DHS secretary's focus on dignity and understanding highlights the complexity of the situation and the need for comprehensive immigration reform.
