Former President Trump is set to face trial in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, with Judge Aileen Cannon scheduling a trial date for May.

While rejecting Trump's legal team's request for an indefinite delay, Cannon acknowledged the complexities of the case and agreed that a trial date in December, as proposed by prosecutors, would not allow for a fair trial.

In her order, Cannon emphasized the need for a balanced approach, stating, "The Court rejects Defendants' request to withhold setting of a schedule now. Nevertheless, the Government's proposed schedule is atypically accelerated and inconsistent with ensuring a fair trial."

However, Trump's team is expected to file various motions in the case, which could further delay the trial. This delay could potentially push the trial closer to the presidential election, prompting additional requests for postponement.

Cannon acknowledged this possibility, stating that the review of these motions would require considerable time, independent of their merits. She also considered Trump's team's argument that they need sufficient time to review all the discovery in the case. The Justice Department had dismissed this claim, noting that the attorneys on the case had delayed applying for the necessary security clearances to review the evidence.

Cannon recognized the volume of discovery in the case and the need for Trump's team to adequately review and evaluate it. She wrote, "By conservative estimates, the amount of discovery in this case is voluminous and likely to increase in the normal course as trial approaches. And, while the Government has taken steps to organize and filter the extensive discovery, no one disagrees that Defendants need adequate time to review and evaluate it on their own accord."

Trump is facing 37 counts in the case, including violations of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice. The trial date of May 20 is subject to further delays due to the anticipated motions from Trump's team.
