Texas, the largest state and the ninth GOP-led state to do so since 2022, has withdrawn from the national bipartisan effort to prevent voter fraud.

The state's exit from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) comes after Texas Republicans expressed concerns about the group's funding and purpose, which have been the subject of conspiracy theories. Republicans in other states have cited different reasons for leaving the initiative and have been working on alternative systems.

Texas submitted a letter to ERIC, notifying the organization of its withdrawal, which will take effect in 91 days, according to a spokesperson for the Secretary of State. As more states withdraw from ERIC, the costs for participating states are expected to increase, said spokesperson Alicia Phillips Pierce. While Texas currently has no immediate plans to join another system, the state is actively researching alternative options.

In addition to Texas, other states that have recently resigned from ERIC include Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, West Virginia, Missouri, Ohio, Iowa, and Virginia. Kentucky, which is required to participate in ERIC due to a court order, is exploring its options, according to Secretary of State Michael Adams. Adams noted that several neighboring states, as well as Florida, where many Kentucky residents retire, are either leaving or not participating in ERIC.

New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver declined an offer from Ohio officials to discuss a data-sharing agreement, expressing her support for ERIC. Toulouse Oliver emphasized the complexity of developing state-by-state agreements and the importance of the security and privacy protocols embedded in the ERIC system.

While multiple Democratic officials have expressed their disinterest in alternatives to ERIC, they remain hopeful that large-population states like California and New York, which are not currently part of ERIC, will join the initiative. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reaffirmed her commitment to ERIC, highlighting the organization's effectiveness and the failure of previous attempts to create similar systems.

The withdrawal of Texas from ERIC adds to the growing number of GOP-led states that have left the initiative. As fewer states participate, the costs for remaining participants are expected to rise. Texas is now exploring alternative options while continuing to prioritize accurate voter lists.

The future of ERIC remains uncertain, with some Democratic officials expressing their support for the initiative and hoping for the inclusion of large-population states.
