President Biden is set to establish a national monument this week in honor of Emmett Till, the Black teenager whose brutal lynching in 1955 played a significant role in igniting the civil rights movement.

According to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity, Biden will sign a proclamation on Tuesday to create the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, encompassing three sites in Illinois and Mississippi. This announcement coincides with the anniversary of Till's birth in 1941.

The decision to establish this national monument is a testament to the enduring impact of Till's tragic story. Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open casket funeral to expose the horrific violence inflicted upon her 14-year-old son. Jet magazine further amplified the message by publishing photographs of Till's mutilated body. These actions played a pivotal role in galvanizing the civil rights movement.

The Illinois site of the national monument will be the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, located in the historically Black neighborhood of Bronzeville on Chicago's South Side. It was at this church that thousands of people gathered in September 1955 to mourn Till's untimely death.

In Mississippi, the national monument will encompass two locations. The first is Graball Landing, believed to be the spot where Till's mutilated body was recovered from the Tallahatchie River. The second is the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, where Till's accused killers were tried and ultimately acquitted.

Till's tragic story began when he was visiting relatives in Mississippi and allegedly whistled at Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white woman, and made sexual advances towards her while she worked in a store in the small community of Money. Subsequently, Till was abducted, shot, and his body was thrown into the Tallahatchie River, weighted down with a cotton gin fan.

Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, two white men, were charged with Till's murder but were acquitted by an all-white Mississippi jury. Months later, they confessed to the killing in a paid interview with Look magazine. Bryant, who was married to Carolyn Bryant Donham at the time of the incident, passed away earlier this year.

The Justice Department closed its investigation into Till's killing in December 2021. In 2022, a grand jury in Mississippi declined to indict Carolyn Bryant Donham, citing insufficient evidence to bring charges of kidnapping and manslaughter against the woman, who is now in her 80s.

The establishment of the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in the United States. It honors the memory of Emmett Till and his mother's unwavering determination to seek justice for her son.
