The Police Benevolent Association (PBA) of New York City took a bold step to express their concerns about the newly elected District Attorney, Alvin Bragg.

Over the weekend, the PBA rented a billboard truck that circulated around Midtown Manhattan, sending a clear message to local businesses: "lock your doors to keep out violent recidivists." The truck also featured a statement from the PBA, accusing Bragg of prioritizing the rights of criminals over the safety and well-being of law-abiding citizens.

The PBA shared a video of the truck on Twitter, accompanied by a caption that warned business owners of the potential consequences they may face if they try to intervene when repeat offenders terrorize their customers and staff. "If you try to stop a repeat offender from terrorizing your customers and staff, you'll be arrested," the caption read. "If you call the police to help, the cop will be arrested."

The message displayed on the truck was direct and unambiguous: "Attention: Manhattan business owners, lock your doors to keep out violent recidivists. Secure your merchandise to stop serial shoplifters. District Attorney Alvin Bragg says that criminals have more rights than you." The PBA urged business owners to support their police force in the face of what they perceive as a lack of support from the District Attorney's office.

PBA President Patrick Hendry addressed the media outside a Manhattan court, emphasizing the importance of business owners taking precautions against repeat offenders. He highlighted the impact that these individuals have on businesses, from theft and harassment to assault and property damage. Hendry accused Bragg of siding with repeat offenders and warned that business owners would face arrest if they attempted to remove criminals from their premises.

Hendry further emphasized the dire consequences of calling 911 for police assistance. According to him, not only would the officer responding to the call be arrested, but they would also face indictment. The PBA's strong stance stems from the recent indictment of Officer Salvatore Provenzano, who was charged by the DA's office for allegedly punching a man while attempting to remove him from an Apple store. The man had reportedly been harassing customers and had previously been banned from the store.

The court documents describe the incident, stating that when the individual pulled away from Officer Provenzano's grasp and turned towards the exit, the officer struck him on the left side of his face, causing substantial pain. In response to the indictment, DA Bragg emphasized the importance of holding those sworn to uphold the law accountable.

While the PBA and the DA's office present differing perspectives on the incident, witnesses have come forward to support Officer Provenzano. Brian Plunkett, a witness, stated that the officer did nothing wrong and that the individual being removed had initiated physical contact. Plunkett expressed his willingness to testify on behalf of the police if called upon.

The PBA's concerns about rising retail theft are not unfounded. Across the country, incidents of shoplifting have been on the rise, and New York City is no exception. In 2022 alone, the city experienced a staggering 45% increase in retail theft, with a total of 63,000 incidents reported. This surge in criminal activity has undoubtedly heightened the concerns of business owners and law enforcement alike.

As the PBA continues to advocate for the rights and safety of business owners, their billboard truck serves as a visible reminder of the challenges they face. The organization's message resonates with those who believe that the rights of law-abiding citizens should be prioritized over those of repeat offenders.

The ongoing debate surrounding the role of the District Attorney's office in addressing crime and protecting the community is likely to persist as New York City grapples with the issue of rising retail theft.
