A Cuban national who entered the United States illegally in 2012 and was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody has been acquitted of murder charges due to his mental illness.

Alexi Saborit-Viltres, who was initially arrested and charged with second-degree murder in 2021 for the beheading of his girlfriend, America Mafalda Thayer, has been found not guilty.

The horrific incident took place in broad daylight in Shakopee, Minnesota, with several witnesses present. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Saborit-Viltres pull Thayer out of the car and then proceed to decapitate her.

When apprehended by law enforcement, Saborit-Viltres claimed that he and Thayer were in a long-term relationship and that he murdered her with a machete because she wanted to end their relationship.

However, a recent ruling by Judge Caroline Lennon cited psychologists who determined that Saborit-Viltres' mental illness prevented him from understanding the moral implications of his actions. The judge's ruling highlighted his history of hospitalizations for "bizarre delusions" in 2013 and a traumatic brain injury from a car crash in 2017, which led to hallucinations.

Saborit-Viltres was also hospitalized in May 2020 due to his belief that there was a camera in his head following the crash. He has been diagnosed with various mental illnesses, including psychosis and delusions.

It is worth noting that Saborit-Viltres was supposed to be deported a decade ago, but ICE agents were unable to obtain the necessary travel documents. This case raises questions about the handling of illegal immigrants with mental health issues and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in ensuring public safety.

America Mafalda Thayer, the victim in this tragic incident, was a naturalized American citizen who had legally immigrated to the United States. She had been employed at My Pillow, a company founded by Mike Lindell. Thayer's friends revealed that she had changed her name to "America" to reflect her pride in becoming an American citizen.

The acquittal of Saborit-Viltres due to his mental illness has sparked debate and raised concerns about the intersection of immigration policy and public safety. It remains to be seen how this case will impact future discussions surrounding the treatment of mentally ill individuals within the criminal justice system and the enforcement of immigration laws.
