Vice President Kamala Harris faced criticism from CNN political commentator Scott Jennings over her recent claim that Florida's middle school curriculum included lessons suggesting that enslaved people "benefited from slavery."

Jennings called the claim a "completely made-up deal" and emphasized that multiple sources, including African-American scholars who wrote the curriculum, have stated that this is not the case. He questioned why Harris would jump on a fabricated issue and highlighted the lack of substance in her response.

During a discussion on CNN's "State of the Union," host Dana Bash asked the panelists about the Democrats' call for Harris to have a more visible presence. Jennings expressed his amazement at how little Harris apparently has to do if she can read something on Twitter one day and immediately respond to it.

He emphasized that the issue Harris addressed was completely fabricated and pointed out that he had thoroughly examined the curriculum standards and the analysis of those standards. He also noted that the African-American scholars who wrote the curriculum have stated that the claim made by Harris is baseless.

Jennings criticized Harris for making a fabricated matter her best moment, highlighting the lack of substance in her response. He questioned why Harris would seize on an issue that has been debunked by multiple sources and suggested that she may be using it as a distraction from more pressing matters.

Harris made her remarks during a speech in Jacksonville, Florida, where she criticized the new curriculum approved by the Florida Department of Education. The curriculum includes the history of slavery in the United States and states that instruction should include how slaves developed skills that could be applied for their personal benefit in some instances.

CNN political commentator Karen Finney praised Harris' remarks, calling it a "stellar moment." She commended Harris for speaking out when something needed to be said and for channeling the feelings of the people. Finney compared the idea of enslaved people benefiting from slavery to suggesting that women were happy when they couldn't vote or have their own banking accounts, describing it as ridiculous.

Another panelist and CNN commentator, Ashley Allison, responded to Jennings' criticism and supported Harris' remarks. She acknowledged that just because the curriculum was written by Black people doesn't mean it is accurate and that disagreement is possible.

Allison highlighted the broader context of the issue, pointing to Florida's governor, who has pushed for bills that are seen as anti-woke and has sought to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. She emphasized that the larger problem is the governor's refusal to acknowledge that slaves did not benefit from slavery and his failure to address the issue.

Allison emphasized that slaves did not have the freedom to choose and therefore did not benefit from any potential opportunities. She expressed hope that in a contentious political environment, everyone could agree that slavery was not a good thing and that slaves did not benefit. However, she criticized the governor for not acknowledging this and for perpetuating a divisive narrative.
