Authorities have reportedly made a significant discovery in the investigation of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann.

According to The New York Post, a soundproof room has been found in the basement of Heuermann's home, where at least one woman may have been killed. This latest development comes as New York State Troopers and Suffolk County police continue to search Heuermann's residence for evidence following his arrest earlier this month.

Photographs obtained by Fox News Digital reveal the extensive efforts being made by law enforcement in the search. Ground penetrating equipment, a backhoe, and cadaver dogs have been utilized in the investigation. Police have been seen removing boxes of potential evidence from Heuermann's home throughout the week. The 59-year-old architect has been charged with the murders of at least three women, and a prosecutor has identified him as a suspect in a fourth killing. Heuermann's attorney, Michael Brown, has stated that his client denies any involvement in the women's deaths.

Among the items recovered from Heuermann's residence are over 200 firearms, a large doll displayed in a glass case, a portrait of a woman with a bruised face, and a filing cabinet. Investigators, some wearing "crime lab" T-shirts and protective suits, have also seized a desktop computer, a large picture frame, a mirror, and various household items.

These charges mark a significant development in one of New York's most notorious mysteries. In 2010, the search for a missing woman near Gilgo Beach led to the discovery of ten sets of human remains scattered along the barrier island. The victims included eight women, one man, and a young child. While authorities believe that multiple individuals were responsible for these killings, they suspect that a serial killer was responsible for several of the bodies found in close proximity to each other.

Heuermann is accused of murdering Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Megan Waterman. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has stated that investigators are working towards charging him in connection with the death of a fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. All four women were sex workers, and their bodies were found within a quarter-mile stretch of Ocean Parkway.

In addition to searching Heuermann's home, investigators have also examined storage units rented by him. Heuermann also owns undeveloped land in South Carolina and a timeshare condominium in Las Vegas, prompting authorities to explore these locations for potential evidence.

The investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders was initially prompted by the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, whose body was found in a nearby coastal marsh in 2011. Suffolk Police concluded that Gilbert's death was accidental drowning, a finding that her family disputes, believing she was also a victim of foul play.

As the investigation continues, authorities are hopeful that the discovery of the soundproof room and the evidence collected from Heuermann's home will provide crucial leads in solving these long-standing mysteries.
