Conservative Club For Growth Vows $20 Million Backing For 'The Patriot 20' GOP Lawmakers In Showdown Against House Speaker McCarthy

The conservative Club For Growth has expressed its dissatisfaction with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and has pledged to spend a minimum of $20 million on the reelection campaigns of the 20 GOP lawmakers who opposed McCarthy's bid for the gavel.

Politico reports that the group, known as "The Patriot 20," includes representatives such as Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL). The Club For Growth's financial support aims to make McCarthy's job more challenging, assuming he remains the speaker during the 2024 election. David McIntosh, the president of the anti-tax organization, expressed concerns that moderate Republicans might target these 20 lawmakers with primary opponents.

McIntosh believes that publicly announcing their financial commitment will serve as a deterrent to potential challengers. He stated, "Moderate donors and candidates seeking to settle scores should save their money because we are prepared to win at all costs."

The Club For Growth's primary focus will be on defending the five vulnerable freshman members of "The Patriot 20": Eli Crane (R-AZ), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Andy Ogles (R-TN), and Keith Self (R-TX). Additionally, the group will closely monitor any primary challengers to the other 15 members, including notable figures such as Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ).
