The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has reaffirmed its commitment to impeding the efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and remove criminal noncitizens, despite the city's impending designation as a sanctuary city for illegal aliens.

A recent report unanimously approved by the Los Angeles Police Commission revealed that the LAPD has consistently disregarded federal immigration law, as reported by the Los Angeles Daily News.

According to the annual "Immigration Enforcement, Task Force Reporting Requirements and Department Operations" report, the LAPD received 783 detainer requests from ICE last year, all of which were refused.

The report emphasized that the LAPD's top priority is public safety and building trust within immigrant communities. They aim to ensure that victims and witnesses, regardless of their immigration status, feel safe to contact the police, report crimes, and provide necessary information. The LAPD remains committed to maximizing public safety for all residents, as stated by police officials.

The report also highlighted that the LAPD continues to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Office of the Chief of Police, which align with the California Values Act. This act, signed into law by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown in 2017, prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from using resources to enforce immigration laws. It also designates certain public facilities, such as schools, libraries, health facilities, and courthouses, as safe spaces for illegal aliens.

While the LAPD refuses to cooperate with immigration officials, individuals suspected of committing crimes are still fingerprinted through the decentralized automated booking system and entered into the National Crime Information Center. This information is accessible to state and federal law enforcement agencies, providing some level of awareness regarding the presence of potentially dangerous foreign nationals in the city.

Despite California already being a sanctuary state with an estimated illegal alien population of over 3.2 million, the Los Angeles City Council voted last month to officially designate L.A. as a sanctuary city. The council instructed the city attorney to draft an ordinance within 60 days that would prohibit the use of city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement purposes. Councilwoman Nithya Raman expressed concern for the fear experienced by many residents in Los Angeles, who live in constant apprehension of being apprehended, detained, and deported by federal immigration authorities.

While criminal noncitizens are made to feel welcome, the LAPD is experiencing a significant exodus of officers. Over the past few years, the force has lost nearly 1,000 officers since 2019, with an additional 500 expected to leave by the end of 2023.

Jerretta Sandoz, Vice President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, recently urged union members to seek employment elsewhere, in cities that appreciate and acknowledge their work. She highlighted the lack of support from certain city council members, emphasizing the need for officers to find a place where they are respected.
