Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah has proposed a strategy to prevent former President Donald Trump from securing the GOP presidential nomination.

In an op-ed piece, Romney suggested that the crowded field of Republican primary contenders should be swiftly narrowed down to a "two-person race before Mr. Trump has the nomination sewn up." He urged GOP donors to start pressuring candidates to drop out of the primary if their chances of winning appear slim.

Romney emphasized the need for Republican megadonors and influencers to take action, stating, "That decision day should be no later than, say, February 26, the Monday following the contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina." He warned that if left to their own devices, several contenders would stay in the race for an extended period, ultimately splitting the non-Trump vote and ensuring his victory. Romney stressed the importance of having a nominee with character, driven by a higher purpose than personal vendettas and ego, preferably from the next generation. He called on family, friends, and campaign donors to encourage hopeless candidates to exit the race, starting from February 26.

It is worth noting that Trump endorsed Romney for the U.S. Senate in 2018 but has since launched attacks against him. In a 2019 tweet, Trump referred to Romney as "a fool who is playing right into the hands of the Do Nothing Democrats!"

Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election to incumbent Democrat Barack Obama, voted to convict Trump after the House had impeached the president following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The Senate vote took place after Trump had already left office. In 2020, Romney also voted to impeach Trump on one of the two articles passed by the House in late 2019.

While primary voting is scheduled to begin next year, Trump has consistently maintained a significant lead over his challengers. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis currently trails Trump in a distant second place.
