A Walgreens convenience store in Richmond, San Francisco, California, has become a hotbed for theft, with an astonishing average of over 12 thefts per day, according to a report by CNN senior correspondent Kyung Lah.

In just 30 minutes, Lah and her crew witnessed three thefts at the store, highlighting the alarming crime rate in the area.

The store's notoriety doesn't stop there. Earlier, employees resorted to placing a lock on a thick chain to protect ice cream and frozen burritos from being stolen. However, the move garnered negative publicity, and the store management requested the removal of the chains.

Residents interviewed by Lah expressed shock and frustration at the escalating retail theft problem. Phil Hammack, a resident, described the situation as resembling a "police state" in San Francisco. He was taken aback when he had to rely on an employee to unlock bags of coffee for purchase. Richie Greenburg, another resident, described the situation as "bizarre" and lamented that rampant crime had become a regular part of life.

The severity of the situation has prompted residents to record incidents of retail theft on their cellphones. CNN's report highlighted how stores have resorted to locking up entire aisles of items behind plexiglass to combat theft.

However, there are signs that residents are growing increasingly fed up and demanding change. Marjan Philhour, a community advocate for small businesses, noted a shift in attitude among everyday San Franciscans. She believes there is less tolerance and more exasperation, leading to action to change how the city is governed. Philhour pointed to the successful recall of a far-left District attorney in 2020 as evidence of this growing movement.

While there is still much work to be done, Philhour remains optimistic about the future. She believes that ultimately, the city will make the necessary changes to address the issue of retail theft. The alarming crime rate at the Walgreens store in Richmond serves as a wake-up call, prompting residents and advocates to push for a safer and more secure environment for businesses and residents alike.
