Billionaire Elon Musk has suggested that tweets on the rebranded Twitter platform will be called "X's."

Musk made the comment in response to a tweet from Sawyer Merritt, who asked, "So now that Twitter has been rebranded to X, what are tweets called now?" Musk's reply, "X's," indicates a shift in terminology on the platform. Another Twitter user, Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, asked Musk what the new name for retweets would be, to which Musk responded, "That whole concept should be rethought."

Musk's comments came as social media users reacted to the design changes on Twitter, which included replacing the classic bird logo with the Musk X logo. While the revisions received some negative feedback, with the platform Mastodon trending once again, the bird logo remains on Twitter's mobile version for the time being. Musk tweeted on Sunday, "[S]oon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds," suggesting that the bird logo will eventually be phased out.

Despite the changes, some users were less concerned and expressed their loyalty to the platform. Jonah Katz, an X engineer, stated, "Twitter could rebrand to a donkey and I'd still scroll for 6 hours a day." Musk responded, "We rebranded to a Shiba Inu dog for a while. No impact." In a separate exchange, Musk explained that Twitter was acquired by his X Corp. to "ensure freedom of speech" and "as an accelerant for X, the everything app."

Musk further elaborated on the need for a rebrand, stating that the Twitter name no longer made sense in the context of the platform's expanded capabilities. He said, "The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video." Musk revealed that in the coming months, the company would add "comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world."

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino also commented on the rebrand, stating in a series of tweets that the new logo represents "the future state of unlimited interactivity," centered around audio, video, messaging, payments/banking, and creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.

To mark the rebrand, the Twitter headquarters building projected an "X" on its side on Monday night. San Francisco police reportedly halted efforts to remove the Twitter signage from the building, according to Insider.
