Former NYC Gynecologist Faces Prison Sentence For Serial Sexual Abuse Of DOZENS Of Patients, Including Minors

Judge Richard M. Berman announced his intention to impose a 20-year sentence during a sentencing hearing on Monday for 64-year-old Robert Hadden. The hearing will continue in the Southern District of New York on Tuesday, with Hadden expected to speak after resolving some legal issues, according to The Associated Press.

"This case is unlike any other in my experience," said Berman on Monday, as reported by the New York Times. He described Hadden's actions as "lewd, serious, unchecked, out of control."

Berman will deliver the sentence once the hearing resumes on Tuesday, unless he changes his mind.

Hadden, who has been in custody since his federal conviction in January, was found guilty on four counts of enticing victims to cross state lines for the purpose of sexually abusing them during appointments.

Although Hadden had his medical license revoked, he managed to avoid prison time by striking a deal with the Manhattan District Attorney's office in 2016.

State charges against Hadden accused him of sexually abusing at least 19 patients. Evelyn Yang, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, revealed in a 2019 CNN interview that she was allegedly one of Hadden's victims. Federal charges were filed in 2020.

During the federal trial, women testified in explicit detail about Hadden's repeated acts of sexualized breast exams and inappropriate touching of their vaginas, which appeared to have no medical purpose. The victims urged the judge to impose the maximum prison sentence.

At the nearly five-hour sentencing hearing on Monday, Hadden blew a kiss to his wife, son, and other supporters seated in the front row of the courtroom.

A 20-year sentence would be four times longer than the four- to five-year term recommended by federal sentencing guidelines, as determined by the judge.

However, Berman argued that Hadden's crimes warranted a lengthier sentence. He described the case as involving "outrageous, horrific, beyond extraordinary, depraved sexual abuse," noting that at least 245 women, out of the thousands Hadden had treated, have come forward claiming to be victims of the former gynecologist.

Defense attorney Deirdre von Dornum objected to the judge's sentencing plans, deeming them excessively harsh.

"Here you have somebody who has already lost everything, and you're giving him effectively a life sentence," said Dornum, according to the AP.

Berman agreed to take the evening to consider the defense's concerns.

Dornum also highlighted the harsh conditions her client is enduring at a federal lockup in Brooklyn, where inmates threaten and extort him for his commissary money.

Nine victims spoke during the initial stage of the sentencing hearing last month. Several of them attended Monday's proceeding but were not given the opportunity to speak again.

Hadden began working at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, which later became New York-Presbyterian Hospital, in 1987. The institutions have agreed to pay over $236 million to settle civil claims brought by more than 200 former patients.
