Republican presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson strongly criticized the recent changes to Florida's black history curriculum in schools during an interview on "The Bulwark Podcast."

Hutchinson expressed his concern that the proposed curriculum revision would take the country back to some of the darkest periods in American history.

When asked about his opinion on Florida's new guidelines on teaching slavery, which include instruction on how slaves developed skills for their personal benefit, Hutchinson vehemently disagreed. He pointed out that fellow Republican presidential candidates Will Hurd and Chris Christie have also criticized Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the new guidelines.

"The language used in the curriculum implies that there was some benefit to slavery, which is absolutely impossible and completely wrong. Such a notion should never be conveyed in a textbook or a lesson. It's just flat-out wrong," Hutchinson stated.

Hutchinson went on to compare DeSantis' new guidelines to the era of Jim Crow laws, stating, "It's like taking us back to the 50s or the Jim Crow days, and that's the wrong direction for America. It is crucially important that our young people understand what happened during the civil rights movement and the oppression of African-Americans throughout the country during the Jim Crow era."

The presidential candidate emphasized the importance of learning about history, even if it may be uncomfortable, in order to prevent the repetition of past mistakes. He cited examples such as the Elaine race massacre in Arkansas and the bombing of the African-American community in Tulsa, highlighting the need to acknowledge and teach about these tragedies. Hutchinson drew a parallel to the Holocaust, stating that learning about such events is not a pleasant experience but is necessary to prevent future violence and discrimination.

Hutchinson concluded by expressing his opposition to changing the instruction on these historical topics. He stressed the significance of teaching about the civil rights struggle and slavery, as they are integral parts of American history that should not be ignored or whitewashed.
