Anheuser-Busch, the brewing company behind the popular brand Bud Light, has announced that it will be laying off several hundred employees in the United States.

This decision comes as the company faces a conservative boycott that has caused a significant decline in sales.

In a statement, Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth acknowledged the difficult nature of these layoffs but emphasized the company's commitment to long-term success. "While we never take these decisions lightly, we want to ensure that our organization continues to be set for future long-term success," Whitworth said. "These corporate structure changes will enable our teams to focus on what we do best—brewing great beer for everyone."

The layoffs will affect less than 2 percent of the company's workforce, which currently stands at 18,000 employees. It is important to note that warehouse and brewery employees will not be impacted. The majority of the positions being cut are corporate roles, with approximately 350 jobs being affected.

Anheuser-Busch's troubles began in April when Bud Light announced a partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Mulvaney revealed the collaboration on social media, showcasing a Bud Light can featuring their face and even posting a video of themselves enjoying the beer in a bathtub. This partnership quickly drew the ire of conservatives, leading to a boycott of the brand.

As a result of the boycott, Bud Light sales have taken a significant hit. In the week ending on July 15, sales were down 13.9 percent, and the brand's volume, which measures the units of beer sold, was down 18 percent. This decline has caused Bud Light to lose its position as America's top-selling beer, with Modelo taking the lead.

The impact of the boycott has also extended to other brands under the Anheuser-Busch umbrella. Sales of Michelob Ultra fell by 4.3 percent in the week ending July 1 compared to the previous year, while Busch Light experienced an 8.5 percent decline.

These layoffs and declining sales serve as a reminder of the power of consumer activism and the potential consequences for companies that find themselves at the center of controversy. As Anheuser-Busch navigates this challenging period, it remains to be seen how the company will adapt and regain its footing in the market.
