Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is set to host the first-ever "Fat Con," a convention specifically catering to fat individuals.

The event, scheduled for October 2023, aims to go beyond the buzzwords of "body positivity" and "body neutrality" and provide a unique experience for attendees.

Adrienne Ray, the operator of a plus-size clothing site, expressed the convention's intention to move away from buzzwords, stating, "We're not into the buzzwords because we've seen how it affects and impacts people — it makes people feel either included or excluded."

The convention seeks to assist fat individuals in navigating a fatphobic world and society in a different way. It will feature various fat-centric fitness classes, including "Curves N' Stilettos," hosted by an alleged professional dancer, which aims to encourage true self-expression by challenging societal norms.

Another class, called "Twerk-lesque," celebrates jiggles, rolls, and culture, drawing inspiration from stripping. This class will be led by a burlesque instructor.

Panels will also be held to discuss topics such as fat fashion, social media influencing, and strategies for navigating fatphobia. The organizers believe that the phrase "body positivity" has become too focused on body image, which can be triggering for individuals with disabilities, chronic illnesses, eating disorders, or those who have been dieting for extended periods.

The idea for the convention originated from what was described as the "largest plus-size clothing swap" in Philadelphia, which featured the founders' brands, including a plus-size lingerie company.

One of the convention's highlights is the presence of "fat sex therapist" Sonalee Rashatwar (they/he). Described as a superfat queer bisexual non-binary therapist and co-founder of the Radical Therapy Center, Rashatwar specializes in treating sexual trauma, diet trauma, racial or immigrant trauma, and South Asian family abuse, while also offering fat-positive sexual healthcare.

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event organizers have implemented a COVID-19 policy. Attendees are recommended to receive a booster vaccine and take a COVID test 48 hours prior to the convention.

The convention extends an invitation to "fat Philadelphians" to connect with others who share similar experiences and understand their perspectives. It aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where attendees can find a sense of community and belonging.
