Hunter Biden, despite his recent legal troubles, remains a member of the District of Columbia Bar in "good standing."

However, it appears that he may have violated the rules of professional conduct in multiple ways.

During a hearing on his plea deal for tax crimes and a felony gun charge, Hunter Biden informed the judge that he is a member of both the D.C. and Connecticut bars. The D.C. Bar's website confirms his active membership. However, Rule 8.4(b) of the rules of professional conduct states that it is considered misconduct for a lawyer to commit a criminal act that reflects negatively on their honesty, trustworthiness, or overall fitness as a lawyer.

The rules further explain that various illegal activities, such as fraud and willful failure to file an income tax return, reflect adversely on a lawyer's fitness to practice law. Considering Hunter Biden's recent plea deal for tax crimes, it is evident that he may have violated this rule.

Additionally, under Rule XI on disciplinary proceedings, attorneys who demonstrate addiction to drugs or intoxicants may face probationary conditions. Hunter Biden's written plea deal, obtained by Politico, reveals his well-documented struggle with substance abuse. The document states that after the death of his brother in 2015, Biden relapsed and progressed from alcohol to illegal drugs, including crack cocaine in 2016. Despite his addiction, he managed to enter into business ventures and secure legal clients, earning millions of dollars in 2017.

Furthermore, Hunter Biden appears to be in violation of Rule 8.4(e), which prohibits lawyers from stating or implying an ability to improperly influence a government agency or official. According to IRS agent Gary Shapley's testimony to the House Oversight and Government Accountability Committee, Biden threatened a Chinese business associate in 2017 by claiming that his father, Joe Biden, was sitting next to him.

In addition to his membership in the D.C. Bar, Hunter Biden is also a member of the Connecticut Bar. However, he has been on administrative suspension since 2021 for failing to pay the Client Security Fund fee. This fee is required of all attorneys admitted to the Connecticut bar and is used to reimburse individuals who have suffered financial losses due to the misconduct of attorneys in the state.

Hunter Biden graduated from Yale Law School in 1996. Former President Bill Clinton had contacted the dean of Yale Law School, Guido Calabresi, in 1993 to request admission for Hunter Biden.

Although the admissions office initially rejected Biden, Calabresi encouraged him to reapply as a transfer student the following year, as reported by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
