The Trump campaign issued a statement in response to the new charges brought against former President Donald Trump, calling it a "desperate and flailing attempt" by the Biden administration to harass him and his associates.

The statement also criticized special counsel Jack Smith, accusing him of trying to salvage an "illegal witch hunt" and find an alternative candidate to run against President Joe Biden.

The latest charges include allegations that Trump attempted to destroy surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago resort after the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a subpoena for him to hand over classified documents that he had taken with him upon leaving the White House in 2021. The Trump campaign statement pointed out that Biden himself has been found to possess classified documents that he took during his time in Washington, but the DOJ does not seem concerned about this.

Special counsel Jack Smith has now brought a total of 40 charges against Trump in this particular case. The Hill reported that one of the new charges relates to a presentation Trump allegedly showed to a book publisher and writer during a meeting in July 2021, which prosecutors described as concerning "military activity in a foreign country."

The conversation took place at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and there is an audio recording of it. Trump has denied showing any documents during the meeting, and the document referred to in the indictment was not listed among the documents mentioned in the charges against him.

In addition to the federal charges under the Espionage Act, Trump is also facing a potential indictment from the DOJ over the Capitol riot on January 6. He is also facing 31 counts of felony charges for falsification of business documents in New York. Furthermore, Fulton County in Georgia is reportedly preparing to charge Trump for his actions following the 2020 election, during which he sought recounts and pursued lawsuits to challenge the election results in key battleground states.

Trump has consistently maintained that these charges are part of a "witch hunt" orchestrated by President Biden, who himself is facing allegations of corruption in Congress. Trump believes that Biden is trying to eliminate his main political opponent through these legal actions.

The Trump campaign's statement reflects their strong opposition to the charges brought against Trump and their belief that they are politically motivated. They argue that the DOJ, under Biden's Attorney General Merrick Garland, is unfairly targeting Trump and his associates in an effort to hinder his potential candidacy in the 2024 election.
