Actor, writer, and producer Kirk Cameron has been hosting story time events at public libraries across the United States for almost a year.

These events involve Cameron reading faith-filled books to children and families while sharing messages centered around patriotism and family values. The events have been highly popular, attracting hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of attendees.

However, during the American Library Association's (ALA) Library 2023 Worldwide Virtual Conference, an executive suggested ways to prevent Cameron and others from booking library rooms for his nationwide story time reading event on August 5. One idea proposed was for member librarians to hold a "library-sponsored Pride festival" on the same day, filling the library with rainbows to promote messages of inclusion and diversity.

In response to this suggestion, three Republican senators have sent a letter seeking answers regarding whether the American Library Association is using taxpayer funds to hinder Americans from reading pro-faith books by Cameron. The senators argue that the ALA has welcomed "drag queen" reading events to its libraries while displaying blatant discrimination against religious publishers. The letter states, "As a recipient of federal funds, the ALA is prohibited from using taxpayer dollars to violate the First Amendment. However, it appears the ALA is ignoring this prohibition for the sole purpose of silencing Brave Books while simultaneously also advocating for ‘Drag Queen Story Hour.'"

Brave Books is the publisher of Cameron's first two children's books, as well as books by other authors such as Missy Robertson, Bethany Hamilton, and Sheriff Mark Lamb of Arizona. The publisher focuses on faith-based children's books that teach traditional values. The senators argue that if an investigation finds that the ALA violated the First Amendment rights of Americans, the organization should not be eligible to receive federal funding.

Fox News Digital reached out to the American Library Association for comment, but no response has been received thus far. Led by Senator Marco Rubio, the letter was sent to Crosby Kemper III, director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, requesting details on how the library association has spent money received from the federal government. The senators also called for the suspension of current federal funding for the ALA while its activities are investigated.

Cameron has been working with the First Liberty Institute, a nonprofit Christian conservative legal organization based in Texas, to hold the ALA accountable for what he perceives as discrimination against him and his pro-faith messaging. In a previous statement to Fox News Digital, Cameron expressed his frustration, stating, "While I’m trying to encourage thousands of Americans to visit public libraries and read wholesome books to their children, the taxpayer-funded American Library Association is not only criticizing me, they are teaching libraries to break the law and conspiring to prevent thousands of families from visiting their own community reading rooms."

The senators' letter also highlights the irony of the ALA receiving millions of dollars in taxpayer funds over several decades, including federal funds for "free community engagement training." The letter emphasizes that public libraries should remain open to the public and not be subject to the political whims of the ALA. It argues that Brave Books deserves the same opportunity as other groups, including those that the ALA actively promotes, to host and organize events in public libraries.

During the ALA's online presentation on June 8, the head of the group's Office for Intellectual Freedom suggested limiting access to meeting rooms to individuals eligible to hold a library card in the community. She also mentioned prioritizing "library-sponsored programs" and holding alternative programs on August 5 to make the library unavailable to the public.

The controversy surrounding Kirk Cameron's story time events and the American Library Association's response has sparked a debate about the role of public libraries in promoting diverse perspectives while respecting First Amendment rights. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this clash between faith-based literature and LGBTQIA-inclusive programming will be resolved.
