Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson has criticized the 2024 GOP field for using the idea of pardoning former President Donald Trump as a campaign strategy.

Hutchinson, who is also a presidential candidate, stated that discussing pardons to gain votes is inappropriate and undermines the justice system. In an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation," he said, "You don't put pardons out there to garner votes. Anybody who promises pardons during a presidential campaign is not serving our system of justice well, and it's inappropriate."

Trump currently faces a federal criminal indictment for mishandling government documents, and there is a possibility of additional charges. He is scheduled to stand trial next year. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, a GOP candidate for the 2024 election, has pledged to pardon Trump in response to the documents case. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has also expressed her inclination to pardon Trump for the sake of national unity. She stated, "I don't want there to be all of this division over the fact that we have a president serving years in jail over a documents trial."

Critics argue that there is a double standard in the justice system, with Trump facing legal scrutiny while President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, is under investigation for his foreign business dealings and attempting to negotiate a plea deal for tax and gun charges. However, Hutchinson believes that his fellow candidates are prioritizing Trump's personal interests over the greater good. He emphasized, "They see differences as to how cases are handled, but that is not a defense in a case that's been brought against Donald Trump."

Hutchinson's remarks highlight the ongoing debate within the Republican Party regarding the role of pardons and the perception of fairness in the justice system. As the 2024 GOP field continues to shape their platforms, the issue of Trump's potential pardons remains a contentious topic.
