A Toronto school board and the education minister have announced that they will be launching investigations into a professional development training program after a former principal died by suicide.

The principal, Richard Bilkszto, had filed a lawsuit alleging emotional distress from antiracist trainings that included concepts from Critical Race Theory.

According to Bilkszto's lawsuit, he attended a training session where he was accused of being a racist. He claimed that Kike Ojo-Thompson, who runs an equity firm called the KOJO Institute, stated that Canada was racist and had never reckoned with its anti-Black history. When Bilkszto disagreed and challenged her comments, he was condemned for appearing to undermine a Black woman.

"We are here to talk about anti-Black racism, but you in your whiteness think that you can tell me what’s really going on for Black people," Ojo-Thompson allegedly said, according to the lawsuit filed by the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism.

Ojo-Thompson was not directly sued by Bilkszto, but the lawsuit was directed at the school district. She has denied the allegations in the lawsuit and has not yet responded to Fox News' request for comment.

Bilkszto also alleged that he was called a "White supremacist" for sharing his beliefs. The fallout from the training session created further issues, and Bilkszto's family believes that the hostile environment took a serious toll on his mental health.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce called the allegations raised by Bilkszto "serious and disturbing." A spokesperson for Lecce stated that his staff will launch a review and present action items to ensure that such incidents never happen again.

"I offer my heartfelt condolences to Richard’s family and friends, as we remember an educator that truly went above and beyond for his students," Lecce added. "No staff member should ever be subject to harassment while in their place of work."

The family released a statement after Bilkszto's death, listing the KOJO training as part of the principal's emotional distress.

The KOJO Institute, which conducted the training, is an equity consultant that promotes Critical Race Theory. Critical Race Theory argues that society is rigged against certain groups based on skin color and rejects the idea of merit-based success as a "myth." It categorizes races into privilege categories, with White people considered unfairly privileged.

According to Ojo-Thompson, racism is embedded within all systems, including education. She offers consulting services to corporations and governments, among others, to address racism.

During a follow-up session, Ojo-Thompson allegedly referred to Bilkszto's disagreement as a "real-life" example of someone supporting White supremacy.

"[N]avigating the whiteness of the education system is a daily hardship," Ojo-Thompson has said. "The dominance of whiteness is not natural but the result of the legacies. Equally, the subordination of Blackness is also not natural."

The Toronto district referred to a previous statement when contacted for comment. In the statement, they announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bilkszto's passing and stated that they would be using an outside agency, King International Advisory Group, to conduct the investigation.

The KOJO Institute released a statement expressing condolences to Bilkszto's loved ones and denying all allegations. They stated that the incident was being used to discredit and suppress the work of those committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. They also welcomed the education minister's review and pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.

The anti-Black racism workshop at the center of Bilkszto's claims took place in the spring of 2021. The KOJO Institute stated that they only learned about the lawsuit in June 2023 through media inquiries seeking their comment..
