The man responsible for the incident has been identified as Darien Young, a 29-year-old who had recently escaped from the minimum-security Calumet House Transitional Housing Unit near Concord, New Hampshire, according to the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. Young had been suspected of shoplifting at the lingerie store on Lincoln Road, as reported by WPLG.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday when Young took a mother and daughter hostage at knifepoint inside the Victoria's Secret store. Promptly responding to the hostage situation, officers from the Miami Beach Police Department arrived at the scene.

Gripping video footage captured Young behind the store's checkout counter during the standoff, tightly gripping the neck of one of the hostages. The daughter, seemingly in prayer, had her hands folded. A witness recounted Young repeatedly shouting, "I'm gonna kill her, I'm gonna kill her, don't make me hurt her, don't make me hurt her," as reported by WPLG.

In an attempt to defuse the situation, a police officer can be heard pleading with the escaped convict, saying, "Put it down, man, please put it down." However, when Young refused to comply, the police were forced to take action. They shot the hostage-taker, who was then rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Despite being in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital's trauma unit, Young reportedly succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

The Miami Beach Police Department released a statement assuring the public that the two hostages were safe and cooperating with detectives. Fortunately, none of the witnesses, police officers, or Victoria's Secret employees were harmed during the hostage situation and subsequent shooting.

The fatal officer-involved shooting will be thoroughly investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to the Miami Beach Police Department.
Prior to his escape, Young had been serving time in New Hampshire for offenses including receiving stolen property, burglary, falsifying physical evidence, and drug charges. Officials from the New Hampshire Department of Corrections revealed that Young was eligible for parole on July 31, with a maximum release date of January 31, 2028. The motive behind Young's 1,500-mile journey from Concord, New Hampshire, to Miami Beach, Florida, remains unclear.
