A close ally of Governor Ron DeSantis has made a lighthearted suggestion that the Florida leader should face an indictment in order to catch up to former President Donald Trump in the polls.

Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who served alongside DeSantis in Congress and has endorsed his campaign, shared his thoughts on DeSantis' presidential aspirations in an interview with McClatchyDC last week.

When asked about how DeSantis and other GOP candidates can navigate Trump's strong support, particularly in light of recent indictments, Massie acknowledged the challenge. "It’s very difficult... I feel sympathy for Trump. And I understand why people are gravitating towards him in this time," Massie said. He went on to explain that the current political climate is seen as a referendum on the "swamp" versus Trump, and not supporting the former president is viewed by some voters as being part of the establishment.

In a light-hearted moment, Massie jokingly suggested, "We gotta figure out, we got to find some judge in Florida that’ll indict DeSantis quick, to close this indictment gap." However, it is important to note that this comment was made in jest.

The interview also delved into speculation about DeSantis' strategy moving forward. When asked how DeSantis can regain momentum in the race, Massie suggested that DeSantis needs to weather out the indictments and show sympathy towards Trump. Massie mentioned that the campaign will be making some changes and will be spending more time on the ground in Iowa. He also emphasized that DeSantis, unlike Trump, is a "Boy Scout kind of guy" who is decisive but not impulsive and has a filter.

In response to criticisms of the DeSantis campaign, Massie defended the governor, stating that he is decisive and has a filter, unlike Trump. Massie also mentioned that the campaign will be adjusting its messaging strategy in the coming months but will maintain the same policy direction that DeSantis has pursued.
