Twitter has removed the iconic "X" sign from its former headquarters, as reported by The New York Times.

The sign, which was installed on Friday to promote the social media company's new name, received over 20 complaints during the weekend. City inspectors attempted to investigate the sign multiple times but were denied access by Twitter employees, who claimed that the sign was only temporary.

According to Patrick Hannan, a spokesman for the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, a building permit is required to ensure the sign's structural integrity and safe installation. Hannan stated that Twitter will be charged fees for the incident, including permits for both the installation and removal of the sign, as well as the cost of the investigation.

One complaint expressed concern about the stability of the sign, stating, "That new 'X' sign looks really unstable and sketchy. A decent earthquake is going to send that thing down on the street!"

The removal of the sign reflects Twitter's rebranding as "X," a transformation that aligns with the vision of Elon Musk, owner of X. Musk aims to turn X into an all-encompassing app and recently announced Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of the company.

Musk expressed his excitement about creating an "everything app" with Yaccarino, stating in a tweet, "In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird."
