The invitation comes in response to Harris' criticism of the African American History standards adopted by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) in July. DeSantis, in a letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, expressed his desire for an "open and honest dialogue" on the matter.
The Florida DOE's African American History standards aim to educate students about the injustices suffered by slaves during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The curriculum also highlights the contributions of African American heroes throughout American history and recognizes the service and sacrifice of African patriots during the Revolutionary Era.

Harris had previously claimed that the curriculum taught that slaves were beneficiaries of slavery, despite the fact that no such curriculum exists or has been proposed in the state. DeSantis, in his letter, invited Harris to Florida to discuss the standards and offered to have Dr. William Allen, an academic who played a key role in their development, join the conversation.
"In Florida, we are unafraid to have an open and honest dialogue about the issues," DeSantis wrote. "And you clearly have no trouble ducking down to Florida on short notice. So given your grave concern (which, I must assume, is sincere) about what you think our standards say, I am officially inviting you back down to Florida to discuss our African American History standards."

The Advanced Placement (AP) African American course, which shares similarities with the new K-12 standards adopted by Florida, teaches that slaves had specialized trades and worked as painters, carpenters, tailors, musicians, and healers. It also emphasizes that slaves used these skills to provide for themselves and others.

Despite the backlash from Harris and other U.S. politicians, the Florida DOE announced in July that it would proceed with the African American history standards and implement the curriculum in classrooms across the state.
DeSantis expressed his disappointment with the Biden administration's criticism of Florida's education system, stating, "Over the past several weeks, the Biden administration has repeatedly disparaged our state and misinformed Americans about our education system." He highlighted that Florida is one of the few states in the nation to require such comprehensive learning about African American history and expected the White House to appreciate the state's commitment to teaching this important subject.
