Senator Tommy Tuberville is demanding answers from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regarding a taxpayer-funded needle exchange program for drug-addicted veterans.

Tuberville argues that the program will harm veterans and disregard state laws.

In a letter dated July 27, Tuberville addressed VA Secretary Denis McDonough, expressing concern that the VA's "Syringe Support Programs" (SSPs) conflict with laws in six states, including Alabama. He emphasized that the VA program could potentially lead veterans to violate their home state laws. Tuberville stated, "It seems contradictory to the will of the states that the VA should offer SSPs to veterans at their medical centers in states where it is unlawful and whose practice could expose veterans to criminal liability."

Tuberville further criticized the VA for superseding state laws in pursuit of a progressive agenda, stating, "I find VA's continued superseding of state laws in order to drive a progressive agenda troubling, and I worry for the future of veteran health because of it."

The senator also expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the VA program in reducing drug use. He questioned the reliability of VA data that claims SSPs contribute to drug use reduction, describing it as "questionable."

Tuberville posed several questions to the VA, demanding answers by September 30. He inquired about the federal law and regulation that grants the VA authority to administer a taxpayer-funded needle exchange program. Additionally, he requested access to data that unequivocally demonstrates that SSPs are responsible for veterans' recovery from substance use disorders. Tuberville also sought information on the total number of veterans receiving needles through the program, the number of veterans enrolled in in-patient rehab, the process for veterans to access the needles, and the oversight provided by the VA.

Tuberville expressed concern about the opioid epidemic and argued that facilitating addictions, particularly among veterans seeking help from the VA, would only worsen the problem. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs has not yet responded to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

This is not the first instance in which Tuberville has fought for states' rights. He has been delaying President Biden's Department of Defense nominees due to his opposition to the Pentagon's policy of providing travel expense reimbursement and paid time off for service members and their families receiving abortions.

Tuberville argued that federal law only permits abortions in limited circumstances, such as rape, incest, and when the mother's life is at risk. He accused the Biden administration of transforming the Department of Defense into an "abortion travel agency" through the use of a memo.

The Biden administration has recently accused Tuberville of impeding military recruitment and retention. In response, Tuberville argued in a previous Fox News Digital article that it is the Democrats who are jeopardizing military readiness by pushing a progressive agenda and politicizing the military.
