Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has made a significant announcement, revealing that she has implemented a ban on the use of fossil fuels in new city-owned buildings.

This decision comes after collaborating with the city's director of the Green New Deal, Oliver Sellers-Garcia. The executive order, which was unveiled in a press release, aims to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the construction and major renovations of city buildings.

The primary objective of this ban is to expedite climate action by ensuring that all new municipal buildings and major renovations operate without relying on fossil fuels. The press release emphasizes that this move will reduce emissions from Boston's building sector and create high-quality jobs, improve public health and quality of life, and advance racial and economic justice.

Under this new order, all new buildings in the city must be planned, designed, and constructed using non-combustion alternatives for cooking (stoves/ovens), HVAC systems, and hot water apparatuses. Mayor Wu justified this decision by highlighting the urgency of the current weather patterns, which serve as a reminder that swift political changes are necessary.

Mayor Wu stated, "Week after week, we see the signs of extreme heat, storms, and flooding that remind us of a closing window to take climate action. The benefits of embracing fossil fuel-free infrastructure in our City hold no boundary across industries and communities, and Boston will continue using every possible tool to build the green, clean, healthy, and prosperous future our city deserves."

In addition to the ban on fossil fuels in new construction, the ordinance also establishes emission standards for "large existing buildings." These buildings, along with all covered and municipal buildings, are required to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The announcement also highlighted the work of Oliver Sellers-Garcia, who holds the position of the city's first "Green New Deal director." This role was created to ensure that Boston aligns with the radical climate agenda initially promoted by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2019. Sellers-Garcia's responsibilities include advancing climate action strategies that address social, racial, and economic inequality.

Sellers-Garcia expressed his commitment to the Green New Deal for Boston, stating, "As part of the Green New Deal for Boston, we are taking an all-of-government approach, finding ways for our Cabinets and departments to play a role in climate action. This Executive Order directs and empowers the Operations Cabinet and facilities managers across the City to lead the decarbonization of our building portfolio."

Furthermore, Sellers-Garcia assured citizens that the executive order would also apply to major renovations, as starting from scratch is not the most sustainable approach to creating green buildings.

The mayor's office emphasized that any new capital investments must contribute to the decarbonization of Boston's building sector. This commitment reflects the city's dedication to combating climate change and creating a sustainable future.
