Democratic politicians in New York City staged a protest outside City Hall on Monday, expressing their dissatisfaction with the Biden administration's handling of the ongoing migrant crisis that they claim has engulfed the city.

The rally was organized by Democratic state Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar of Queens, who described the situation as "one of the most significant humanitarian crises our city has ever faced."

Rajkumar emphasized the broad support for the cause, stating, "This is an incredible citywide coalition, with not only 60 elected officials, but also faith leaders, unions, employers, migrants themselves, and the people who care for the migrants in the shelters. Literally, the whole city is coming together to ask President Biden for urgent action."

The primary demands put forth by the protesters were for the Biden administration to expedite work permits for migrants and develop a comprehensive plan to provide shelter for those who are currently sleeping on the city's sidewalks due to a lack of available space.

Despite repeated requests for assistance from the federal government by Democratic Mayor Eric Adams over the past year, the Biden administration's response has been deemed inadequate by local politicians.

"It's not going to get any better," Adams warned. "From this moment on, it's downhill. There is no more room."

City Councilwoman Lynn Shulman of Queens voiced her disappointment with the Democratic White House's handling of the influx of asylum-seeking migrants, quoting the lyrics of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" to convey her message: "Where have you gone, President Joe Biden? New York City turns its lonely eyes to you. Please help us, Mr. President."

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, a Democrat, reaffirmed the city's sanctuary status while urging the White House to provide more aid and "finally show up."

"These other states don't want them? We'll take them happily," Reynoso declared. "But with that responsibility, we need partners in the federal government to say, 'We're going to help you solve the problems that exist because of the migrant crisis in New York City.'"

Democratic Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine characterized the protest as a "cry for help."

"If you had told me a year and a half ago that in the midst of a major refugee crisis, the federal government would not mobilize to help nearly 100,000 human beings at risk, I wouldn't believe you. But that is precisely what we are facing now in New York," Levine lamented.

The protest serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by New York City as it grapples with the ongoing migrant crisis. The demands put forth by the Democratic politicians highlight the urgent need for the Biden administration to address the situation and provide the necessary support to alleviate the strain on the city's resources.
