Republican presidential hopefuls responded on Tuesday to the news of a four-count indictment against former President Donald Trump.

Vivek Ramaswamy, author and entrepreneur, pledged that if elected president, he would pardon Trump. In a tweet, Ramaswamy criticized the federal police, calling their actions un-American and stating, "I commit to pardoning Trump for this indictment.".

Ramaswamy also announced that he is filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request related to the indictment. Earlier this year, he had filed a similar request regarding another indictment against Trump and had also pledged to pardon him in that case. In a tweet on Tuesday, Ramaswamy stated, "I just filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice following its failure to substantively respond to my FOIA request to uncover what White House officials including President Joe Biden communicated to Merrick Garland & Jack Smith about the unprecedented indictment in the classified documents case of a former U.S. President and one of Biden's political opponents in the 2024 Presidential election. I'm also filing a separate FOIA request with the DOJ to uncover any similar communications relating to the just-issued Jan 6 Trump indictment."

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who served alongside Trump, also commented on the indictment. In a tweet, Pence stated, "Today's indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States." He added that he would have more to say about the government's case after reviewing the indictment, emphasizing that Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence. However, Pence expressed concern that the indictment would lead to more discussions about the events of January 6th and create distractions. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Constitution, stating, "On January 6th, Former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution and I always will."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is currently polling in second place behind Trump in the GOP presidential nomination contest, also weighed in on the indictment. In a tweet, DeSantis pledged to end the weaponization of government, replace the FBI Director, and ensure a single standard of justice for all Americans. While he had not read the indictment at the time of his tweet, DeSantis expressed the need for reforms that would allow Americans to have their cases heard in their home districts rather than in Washington, DC. He criticized the "swamp mentality" of the capital and argued that the politicization of the rule of law is one of the reasons for the country's decline. DeSantis concluded by stating, "No more excuses—I will end the weaponization of the federal government."
