Former Vice President Mike Pence wasted no time in expressing his thoughts on the recent indictment of former President Donald Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

In a statement released shortly after the indictment was announced, Pence did not hold back, accusing Trump of prioritizing himself over the Constitution. He also criticized Trump's potential candidacy, arguing that it would only serve as a distraction from President Biden's record.

Pence stated, "Today's indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States." He went on to say that he would provide further commentary on the government's case after reviewing the indictment.

While acknowledging that Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, Pence expressed concern that his candidacy would shift the focus away from important issues such as Biden's economic policies and allegations of corruption involving Hunter Biden. Pence emphasized that the country and the Constitution are more significant than any one individual's career.

Pence made it clear that he had chosen the Constitution over Trump on January 6, when the former President demanded his loyalty. He stated, "On January 6, former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution and I always will."

The indictment against Trump includes four federal charges related to the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol and attempts to obstruct the certification of the 2020 presidential election. This is the second federal indictment Trump faces as a result of Smith's investigation. Trump, who is currently leading the 2024 GOP presidential primary field, has already pleaded not guilty to 37 counts related to the alleged improper retention of classified records from his presidency.
