According to The Wall Street Journal, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has had a significant impact on the test scores and certifications of new graduates in various industries.

The shift to remote learning has resulted in a decline in pass rates for national certifications and assessment exams in fields such as engineering, office work, the military, and nursing.

The pandemic forced many students out of the classroom and into remote learning, which has had a negative effect on their ability to acquire industry-specific skills. High school graduation rates have fallen, and scores for college admissions exams have reached a 30-year low for students who were in high school and college when the pandemic hit.

Roman Devengenzo, an engineer who worked with new hires while consulting for a robotics company in Silicon Valley, highlighted the importance of hands-on learning. He stated, "You learn by doing. These kids in school during the pandemic, all they've done is work on computers."

A study conducted by the nonprofit NWEA, which creates academic assessments for students, found that students in grades Pre-K to 12 needed an average of four extra months of school instruction to catch up to grade-level expectations. Incoming ninth graders were particularly affected, requiring at least a full year of extra instruction to reach expected levels.

The impact of the pandemic on the nursing profession has been significant, with approximately 100,000 nurses leaving the field. Scores for nursing school entrance exams have dropped by an average of 5% compared to pre-pandemic scores. Similarly, scores for Army recruiting exams have fallen by 9%, and engineering exams have declined by 10% following the pandemic.

These declines in test scores and certifications have contributed to a decrease in national productivity for the past five quarters, starting in 2022. This has resulted in the longest contraction in productivity since at least 1948, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Furthermore, the pandemic has led to a surge in employee turnover, which has hampered productivity for businesses. The need to train new employees at high volumes has placed a strain on companies. In November 2021 alone, more than 4.5 million workers voluntarily left their jobs.
